It’s 2022, pretty much 2023. The technological world has evolved into an incredible universe full of diversity, knowledge, and convenience, yet…many companies STILL can’t properly retain their employees. Therefore; we’ve got to sit back and really ponder the whys.
First of all, it is not cheap to recruit employees. I’ve seen it, worked in the Human Resources field, and have recruited over 33 employees at the government agency I was employed with.
For example, if an offer was set for $50,000 annually, it actually turns into $64,950 due to costs in benefit enrollments.
As recruiters, data has shown according to the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) that it takes roughly 40 days to successfully fill an open position.
Ohhhh, then there’s ONBOARDING and TRAINING with the gamble that the employee lasts more than six months. All in all, it’s a huge investment every time someone is hired by a company.
Then, why are so many people leaving the professions that they’ve been at for so many years? It could very well be the actual job itself due to boredom, tired of complacency, but most of the time, it’s the management and lack of leadership.
According to Zavvy, the three top reasons why people leave their day jobs are low pay and/or lack of opportunities for growth, feeling disrespected at work, and childcare issues.
I can understand job opportunities and growth advancements, but leaving because people feel disrespected should NOT be in the top five!
Effective leadership begins with active listening, empathy, and understanding that frontline employees keep the ship afloat. Oftentimes we view top-tier management as the definition of success for a company, but that’s not true.
According to Western Governor’s University, the key components of being an effective leader included some of the following:
- Clear communication
- Leads by example
- Practices patience
- No micromanagement!
- Transparency
- Fair — unbiased amongst team members
- Standing up for their team
It sounds like many hiring agencies are aware of the issues and what steps are needed to achieve successful leadership, but why are so many companies still struggling and losing money?
Maybe it’s time to do a deep evaluation of current practices and strategize on cultivating a better place for everyone. I promise you… changing these aspects and putting the RIGHT kind of leadership in your various departments will expedentially increase your staff’s quality of work, happiness, and overall success to your organization.
